I flat-ironed my hair every single day from age 14 to about 26. Not exaggerating. Every day. My mom did it too, her sisters did it, it was just what you did — you woke up, you straightened your hair, you went to school. Nobody told me my waves were fine the way they were, and honestly I'm not sure I would've listened anyway.
I'm Mexican-American, grew up in San Antonio, still live in Texas. My hair is somewhere between 2B and 3A depending on humidity and whether Mercury is in retrograde. It's dark brown, thick, and has its own opinions about what it wants to do on any given day. After years of heat damage I finally let it grow out natural and went through that awkward phase where half your head is straight and half is wavy and you just wear a bun for six months. It was not cute but I got through it.
Now I write about wavy and curly hair care — mostly the practical stuff. How to air-dry without looking like you just woke up. How to keep color (I've been doing my own balayage touch-ups since 2022, don't judge me). How to survive Houston humidity without a ponytail. I grew up hearing my abuela's hair remedies and sitting in bilingual salons where the advice was half Spanish half English and always honest. That's the energy I try to bring.
I don't believe in routines that take more than 20 minutes on a weekday. If it works on a rushed Tuesday morning, it works. If it only works when you have an hour and a diffuser and perfect conditions, I'm not recommending it.
